N.J. man dies after he’s struck by van on Route 22

A 48-year-old Plainfield man died Wednesday night after he was struck by a van as he walked on Route 22 in Somerset County, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not released, was struck about 8:30 p.m. near France Drive in Branchburg Township as the van traveled in the left lane of the highway, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and local police.
The victim was found face down in the grassy median on Route 22 and treated at the scene by first-responders before being taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, where he died.
Both occupants of the van told police the pedestrian was walking in the middle of the highway wearing dark clothing when he was struck, the prosecutor’s office and police said in a joint statement.
The van driver, 60, and a passenger, 21, both from Whitehouse Station, said they were unhurt and declined medical attention at the scene, according to police.
No charges were filed. The death remains under investigation by the Branchburg Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team.
